The aim of the research programme Nordic Spaces: Formation of States, Societies and Regions, Cultural Encounters, and Idea and Identity Production in Northern Europe after 1800 is to generate new research on Northern Europe and research collaboration within the region.

Susanne Österlund-Pötzsch, Ph.D., is a researcher in Folkloristics at Åbo Akademi University, Åbo/Turku. Her research has focused on ethnic identity among Finland-Swedish immigrant descendants in North America but has also addressed folk drama, migration from the Åland Islands, and Finland-Swedish identity. Current research interests include walking practices, performance, rhythm and spatiality. She has conducted several fieldworks on the above topics as well lectured, presented conference papers and written articles about them. Her other publications include American Plus. Etnisk identitet hos Finlandssvenska ättlingar i Nordamerika (2003) and Swedish Folklore Studies in Finland 1828-1918 (2008).
